Eco-Schools is a recognised award scheme, rewarding and accrediting schools who have made commitment to continuously improving their environmental performance. In St Mary's we engage with the EcoSchools Programme to raise awareness of environmental issues through activities that link to curriculum subjects. The aim of the Eco-Schools programme is to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of our school for both for our pupils and our staff.
In St Mary's we are very concerned about the environment and our place within it. The Eco-Schools programme in Northern Ireland addresses ten topics some of which we are adressing this year: As a result of our efforts in energy and waste recycling, we have already achieved our bronze award, silver award and two green flags. We are very proud of the efforts of the students and staff on the Eco Team as well as the efforts made by the staff as a whole.
How Does Eco Schools Work?
The process involves three main stages:
1. Implementing the seven elements of the Programme as listed below.
2. Applying for one the awards - bronze, silver and Green flag status
3. Renewing the award every two years
